Birkenstock is a German footwear manufacturer known for producing Birkenstocks, a German brand of sandals and other footwear known for their molded cork soles made with layers of suede and jute, which conform to the shape of their wearers' feet. Founded in 1774 by Johann Adam Birkenstock and headquartered in Neustadt, Germany, the goal was to create shoes that support and contour the foot, compared to the flat soles of many shoes at the time. In 1896 the sole was designed and in 1925 Birckenstocks were sold all over Europe. and opened two shoe stores in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1925 Konrad expanded the business by purchasing a large factory. after the second world war, the sandal was popular with the returning soldiers.
In 2012, Birckenstock was spotted on a catwalk in Paris. This model of the Arizona sandal called Furckenstocks had a footbed covered in mink. Many other designers have also made their version of the sandal. Brands include Giambattista Valli and Givenchy. In 2019, Valentino teamed up with Birkenstock to create their version of the sandal that was featured at Men's Paris Fashion Week. On June 3, 2021, the Birkenstock Group announced a collaboration with fashion designer Rick Owens. From June 4 of that year, interpretations of the Arizona and Boston models were released. A new Rotterdam style was also presented and offered for sale.

The original footbed of the Birkenstock shoe was made in 1930 and has four different layers. The first layer of the shoe is the shock-absorbing sole, then a layer of jute fibres, a sturdy cork footbed and another layer of jute. The last layer is the footbed line which is a soft suede. In addition to the original footbed, Birckenstock offers a soft footbed. The shoe is made of the same materials as the original footbed with the addition of a foam insert under the suede.
